Carmichael to Deliver Talk at the Indiana Historical Society

CWI Director Peter Carmichael will explore a marriage tested by the Civil War at the Indiana Historical Society on August 23. Beginning at 7:00 pm in the History Center, Carmichael’s talk will highlight the marriage of David Beem, a captain in the 14th Indiana, and his wife Mahala, and their struggles to understand the other’s perspectives on the war, as they unfolded in their wartime letters to each other. Through their letters, the Beems, like thousands of other ordinary citizens in Indiana, were able to span the great physical distance that separated them, but even in their outpouring of letters, they struggled to understand each other’s perspectives on the meaning, purpose, and longevity of the war.
