On July 4, 2020, four Gettysburg College faculty members, including CWI Director Pete Carmichael, took part in efforts to counter the armed militia occupation of Gettysburg NMP with a historically informed perspective on both the battle and the legacy of the Civil War. Carmichael, Chris Kaufmann (Theatre Arts) and Kurt Andresen (Physics) joined Scott Hancock (History) in an organized attempt to counter demonstrators’ understanding of the Civil War with emphasis on historical context, broader lenses, and an understanding of the relationship between race-based slavery and the war. Hancock and Carmichael later published reflections about their experiences on the Journal of the Civil War Era’s blog, Muster.
