The Civil War Institute is pleased to announce a new giving initiative devoted to student opportunities in the field of battlefield preservation and historic preservation. The Gary W. Gallagher Fund is named in honor of Gary Gallagher, John L. Nau III Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Virginia and a giant in the field of Civil War preservation; Dr. Gallagher was a founding member and first president of the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites and twice a member of the Civil War Trust's board. The Gallagher Fund will advance Dr. Gallagher’s advocacy for at-risk landscapes through providing new educational and professional opportunities for Gettysburg College students interested in historic preservation. Many internship opportunities in preservation law, lobbying, and policy are frequently located in urban areas with steep housing costs; housing stipends from this fund will thus open new opportunities to students. Resources from the Gallagher endowment will also be used to compensate adjuncts to teach courses in preservation law, non-profit management, and historic preservation.
Donations to support the Gallagher Fund are welcome at all times, and can be easily made online.
