Welcome to the May edition of our GLC Director’s Letter.
This past weekend, Gettysburg College celebrated the Class of 2019 with an emotional and inspiring Commencement. Of course, it was extra special this year because it was the last graduation ceremony led by our beloved 14th president, Janet Morgan Riggs ’77.
It is hard to describe in short or simple terms the impact that Janet’s leadership has had at Gettysburg. During my first year at the College, I distinctly remember how positively my new colleagues spoke of her ability and approach. Janet’s stellar reputation as a leader is universal on the Gettysburg campus, as well as across our College constituencies—and her legacy will endure well beyond her retirement.
As the director of an organization dedicated to leadership development, I am often asked: “Who are the leaders that you admire?” My response, more often than not, is Janet Morgan Riggs. Her authenticity, passion, honesty, and individualized consideration are the primary characteristics for which I have deep admiration. These characteristics are commonly found in the leadership literature as indicators of people who exhibit transformational and ethical styles, and are found to be the most effective leaders.
In a world in which we are generally more disappointed by our leaders than we are proud, Gettysburg has been privileged to have such an exceptional president over the past decade.
At Commencement, we also said goodbye to five fabulous senior Leadership Mentors who have served as committed student leaders over the last few years. During their time at the GLC, they have played a pivotal role in helping hundreds of Gettysburg students and young alumni recognize their potential to lead. We will miss them greatly!
