Gettysburg College students reflect on their past experiences and leverage them as inspiration for their future careers.
Take Jeff Binner ’14, a graduate of the Sunderman Conservatory of Music. Binner spent his childhood in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, fascinated by the Amish harvesting season. Specifically, Binner was curious about the harvesting cycle, which begins with plowing and seeding, followed by a brilliant growing season, and finally concludes with a plentiful harvest—and year after year this cycle endures.
Binner took his appreciation for this simple, yet crucial pattern and employed his rigorous musical background from Gettysburg under the mentorship of Prof. Avner Dorman to compose The Harvest of Lancaster County, which was premiered by the Allegro Chamber Orchestra this past November.
In addition to his exploratory work in Lancaster as a composer and conductor for the Allegro Chamber Orchestra, Binner has composed music for commercials, television, film, and professional and school ensembles. Notable musicians who have performed his music include SHUFFLE Concert, the Amernet String Quartet, and the Da Capo Chamber Players.
Today, Binner—who won the 10th Annual Reading Session with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra while at Gettysburg College—works for Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY). In his role, Binner finds dynamic choral groups to perform at Carnegie Hall and The Lincoln Center.
