Dr. Hakim Mohandas Amani Williams awarded the 2018 Flowers-Fund-Grant

Dr. Hakim Mohandas Amani Williams has been awarded the 2018 Flowers-Fund-Grant. Dr. Williams has chosen to use his grant to provide a free, half-day workshop to local teachers at Gettysburg College sponsored by the college’s peace and justice studies program during peace and justice week on campus. The workshop, “Teaching Human Rights: From Gettysburg to the World,” increased participant understanding of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, human rights theory, and how to implement human rights into their curriculum. Participants were also asked to track how they implement the new learning material.

“I was able to learn more about the UDHR and other treaties that are related to it. The discussion we had was valuable, as was the time to think about how we would use the information in our classes,” commented Sharon Kaya, a sixth-grade teacher at Vida Charter School in Gettysburg, PA. The workshop is a successful example of Gettysburg College’s passionate educators making a difference in the community and inspiring positive change in the world.
