Gettysburg College continues to evolve with changing times to meet industry needs, preparing our undergraduate and master’s students to achieve personal and professional success upon graduation.
Today, our nation has a pressing need for highly qualified and compassionate K-12 educators—and Gettysburg College is stepping forward to meet the moment.
We are proud to announce our new online Master of Education degree program. This is the region’s first master’s program that sits at the crossroads of educational access and design thinking, blending theory with practical application.
The new master’s program has been submitted to the Middle States Commission for Higher Education for approval. Applications for this year's inaugural cohort will open from March 1 to April 15, with classes beginning on May 19.
“By offering an online Master of Education, Gettysburg College is investing in practicing teachers, so they cannot only refine their craft but also become leaders and innovators in the field of education,” said Educational Studies in Sociology Prof. Divonna Stebick, who serves as the director of the Office of Teacher Education and Certification.

The College’s new M.Ed. in Educational Design and Inquiry will equip students with a foundation in inclusive education, design thinking, and teacher inquiry. This two-year program accommodates the demanding schedules of working teachers. Its flexible online format incorporates three summers and offers optional in-person learning opportunities at Gettysburg’s Innovation and Creativity Lab, where they can explore cutting-edge strategies to address real-world educational challenges.
With an average class size of 8-10 K-12 teachers, Gettysburg M.Ed. students will progress through their courses together as a tight-knit cohort, studying topics such as place-based education and classroom culture. They will gain advanced content knowledge and learn pedagogical techniques that can adapt to diverse learning needs and the ever-changing field of education.
Each cohort will collaborate closely with their peers and faculty mentors through action-based research projects, exchanging new ideas and global perspectives from various grades, school systems, and levels of experience. All students will also develop their own instructional strategies and materials through a capstone project, which will identify opportunities to address existing educational challenges or create new inclusive pedagogical initiatives.
Upon graduating with a Master of Education from Gettysburg College, these K-12 educators—enrolled from school districts across the nation—will be empowered as leaders to accelerate student learning and advance access in education.
