Women’s Basketball brings home Centennial Conference championship
Led by Most Valuable Player Emily Gibbons ’19 Gettysburg College claimed its second Centennial Conference championship by grinding out a hard-fought 44-35 victory over Haverford College in front of a raucous and supportive crowd inside Bream Gym Saturday night.
Gettysburg (25-2), which set the program record for victories in a season, scored the game’s final nine points to get by Haverford (21-6) and earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. It was the program’s second Centennial crown and first since winning it front of the home crowd in 2013.
“This is the coolest thing I’ve ever felt,” said Gibbons, who posted her 10th double-double of the season (11 points, 12 rebounds). “Coming in as a freshman I always dreamed of hosting the conference championships and having the ability to host in front of a huge crowd and do it with this team is really something special.”
The Gettysburg College women’s basketball team will battle Albright College in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship hosted by Montclair State University this Friday, March 2, at 5 p.m. Gettysburg will make its sixth appearance in the “Big Dance” and first since 2013.
Conference Champs! Men's swimming team reclaims Centennial title
Ty Dougherty ’18 was named the Most Outstanding Male Performer for the second time in his career and the Gettysburg College men’s swimming team put the finishing touches on a dominant showing at the Centennial Conference Championships Sunday night at Franklin & Marshall College, piling up 759.5 points to win the team title by 216 points over runner-up Swarthmore College.
The Bullets captured their 15th Centennial Conference title and their seventh over the last eight years. It was also the 42nd Centennial or Middle Atlantic Conference men’s or women’s title for Gettysburg head coach Mike Rawleigh.
Wrestler heads to NCAA Division III championship
Colin Kowalski ’19 won his final two matches at 165 pounds to secure a third-place finish at regionals and clinch a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship on March 9-10 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Kowalski earned his first national appearance by winning four of his five bouts at the Southeast Regional. His only loss occurred in Saturday's opener as fifth-ranked Jeff Hojnacki of Messiah College managed to slip by the Bullet junior 3-1 in sudden victory.
The national tournament will take place at the Cleveland Public Auditorium on March 9-10.
Men’s lacrosse wins in double overtime
Jack Harvey ’19 scooped up a loose ball and fired in the game-winning goal with 1:09 left in the second overtime, sending the 13th-ranked Gettysburg College men’s lacrosse team to an 11-10 upset over No. 1-ranked and two-time defending Division III national champion Salisbury on Saturday afternoon at a wet Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
The win was Gettysburg’s first over a No. 1-ranked team since its 7-5 victory over Cortland on March 6, 2010. It was also the Bullets' first home victory over Salisbury since a 7-5 win in the 2002 NCAA Division III quarterfinals.
Gettysburg returns to action next Saturday, when it visits No. 15 Stevenson at 7 p.m. in another non-conference clash.
Women’s lax races past Stevenson
Kate Landry ’18 posted seven points and scored the 200th of her career to lead the top-ranked Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team to a 21-3 non-conference decision over Stevenson University Saturday at Clark Field.
Women’s lax hosts Denison University next Sunday at 1 p.m.
