Advisor/Important notes:

  • Hybrid/Group Programs offer students the ability to learn alongside other global study students from US institutions at international study centers. Some hybrid/group programs allow students to enroll in a couple of courses at local universities, but a majority of these programs are taught by local faculty and professionals through an affiliated study abroad provider at their program’s academic center. These programs frequently offer courses that relate to the program location including language and culture classes, and they tend to focus less on STEM courses. On a vast majority of hybrid/group programs, students live with host families/homestays, providing them a great connection to the local culture.
  • This program fulfills the French Department study abroad requirement.
  • Nantes is a smaller city than Paris with far less tourism. Locals are less likely to automatically switch to English so this program is the most linguistically immersive.
  • Students will take a French language course with IES Abroad and then enroll in the University of Nantes (Nantes Université) or the Arts school (École des Beaux-Arts de Nantes). They offer courses from a broad range of subjects, including STEM courses!
  • Students live in a homestay in Nantes, oftentimes in the city center. The university is located in the outskirts of the city.
  • Nantes is near Normandy and has beautiful architecture. It is about 2 hours by train to Paris.
  • Students cannot enroll in courses at the local universities if their gpa is lower than a 3.0.

Program Highlights:

  • This French Language Immersion & Area Studies Program has two important goals: to improve your written and verbal proficiency in French through language and area studies courses, and to introduce you to contemporary France and its role in the European Union.
  • Take courses at local universities in France, volunteer in the local community, participate in teaching internships, and live with a local family in Nantes!
  • Why Nantes? Nantes just might be the perfect place to improve your French language skills. That’s because it’s not a tourist destination, so English is rarely spoken. But Nantes is a spectacularly beautiful city on the Loire River, featuring gorgeous architecture, charming attractions, and beautiful outdoor spaces. Nantes is home to some of the most delicious food France has to offer. It’s also very manageable, eco-friendly, and great to bike around in. Explore all that this city has to offer as you immerse yourself in French language, culture, academics, and innovation!
