Advisor/Important notes:

  • Hybrid/Group Programs offer students the ability to learn alongside other global study students from US institutions at international study centers. Some hybrid/group programs allow students to enroll in a couple of courses at local universities, but a majority of these programs are taught by local faculty and professionals through an affiliated study abroad provider at their program’s academic center. These programs frequently offer courses that relate to the program location including language and culture classes, and they tend to focus less on STEM courses. On a vast majority of hybrid/group programs, students live with host families/homestays, providing them a great connection to the local culture.
  • Spanish majors and minors must speak with faculty in the Spanish Department before selecting a global study program.
  • Students must be above level 102 in Spanish.
  • Students should be careful to avoid 1 credit courses (from this program or ANY program, as they will not appear on the Gettysburg transcript)
  • Non-Spanish major/minor students are eligible to take courses taught in English as long as they are listed under the Language and Area Studies program (the program we are affiliated with).
  • Students live with a host family (homestay).

Program Highlights:

  • Experiential Education opportunities: Community-based learning seminar (Fall only), Internship Seminar in Education (Spring only).
  • Get the best of both worlds in Salamanca: the atmosphere of a university town—think bustling cafés and restaurants filled with students—and the charming hospitality of a small Spanish city. Practice your Spanish while ordering a café and immerse yourself in the university student scene, located in the historic part of town. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, Salamanca is the most important university city in Spain and is known for its contributions to Spanish language education.
  • Enrich your academic experience through language-exchange activities with an IES Abroad Spanish Mentor.
  • Try out for an official University sports team.
  • All students take an IES Abroad-taught Spanish language course. Students who place into SP303 or higher will be able to take Spanish-taught area studies courses, as well. Regardless of prior semesters of Spanish, all students will have the option to take English-taught courses at the IES Abroad Center along with local partner universities, the Universidad de Salamanca (USAL) and Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca (UPSA).
