Underground Railroad Coalition Formed
Nearly three dozen local and regional historians and preservationists have joined to form the Adams County Underground Railroad Coalition. They intend to explore how the community can organize and take action in documenting the history of the Underground Railroad in the area. The greater Gettysburg community had significant and early involvement in helping freedom seekers. Thaddeus Stevens, who had established a law practice in Gettysburg, became known for his abolition sentiments. Quakers living in upper Adams County were among the first to aid the freedom seekers. The Adams County Anti-Slavery Society was formed at McAllister's Mill on July 4, 1836 by concerned community leaders.
The coalition hopes to welcome researchers who would aid in developing a comprehensive story of the UGRR activity in the area. Please contact Chuck Teague for more information at 717-338-9919 or Gettysburg@PAonline.com.
