Diversity Statement

Gettysburg College Psychology Department - Statement on Diversity in Psychology

We, the faculty of the Gettysburg College Psychology Department, affirm the worth and dignity of all people, and condemn all forms of discrimination and bias for the psychological, social, and cultural harm that these inflict. We acknowledge that the field of psychology historically has helped create and sustain institutionalized systems of privilege and oppression ( American Psychological Association ). At the same time, contemporary psychological science has a unique role to play in understanding and dismantling these systems as well as in learning how best to build equitable, just, and inclusive communities. We are dedicated to promoting respect and inclusivity in our classrooms, laboratories, and in the broader discipline of psychology, and we commit to creating a welcoming environment where all students, staff, and faculty can flourish.
