The 30-credit program is fully online and fully accredited. The program is open to K-12 educators, district supervisors, librarians, museum professionals, and National Park Service employees who are affiliated with the Gilder Lehrman Institute.

- Recognize and analyze major developments in American history such as the expansion of civil rights and participation in democratic processes, the industrialization and urbanization of America, and the impact of immigration on American institutions and culture.
- Recognize and analyze major trends in the historiography of America such as the expansion of the field over time to include consideration of race, gender, and class as central themes and the recent move to place national history in a transnational context.

- Read secondary sources in American history critically by evaluating scholars’ arguments based on analysis of evidence presented and methods used to make those arguments.
- Successfully locate and expertly analyze primary sources in American history.
- Navigate digital archives in American history effectively to complete assigned readings and research projects.
- Write clearly and concisely following the disciplinary conventions of American history.
