Gettysburg College–Gilder Lehrman MA in American History Program: Graduate Admission Policy, June 2024

Applicant Eligibility—Eligible applicants must be professionals in the following fields who are affiliated with the Gilder Lehrman Institute: K-12 educators (including teachers of all subjects, district supervisors, permanent substitute teachers, media specialists), community college educators, museum professionals, and National Park Service employees. A bachelor’s degree is required to be considered for admission to the program.

Application Plans and Requirements—Students can apply for the MA in American History program which is a 10-course Master’s program. Students not interested in receiving the MA degree can apply for two non-degree programs:

  • Non-Degree: Students can take up to 12 credits (4 courses) with no intention of earning a degree. They can switch into the MA program at any time.
  • MA +15/30: K-12 Teachers with an existing Master’s Degree from Gettysburg College or elsewhere can take courses to earn credits (5 or 10 three-credit courses, respectively).

Applicants must submit the following documents to be considered for admission to the Gettysburg College–Gilder Lehrman MA in American History Program:

  • Graduate Application for admission.
  • Transcripts from all post-secondary degree-granting institutions attended. Unofficial transcripts can be submitted for admission, but all admitted students must submit official documents by the end of the first semester.
  • Gilder Lehrman Letter of Affiliation.
  • Letter of Intent.
  • Resume listing all completed education, degrees conferred, and current and past work experience.
  • Applicants who have not completed a degree at an institution where English was the primary language of instruction must submit English-proficiency test scores.

Conditional Admission and Matriculation—Students submitting unofficial transcripts are conditionally admitted, and official transcripts must be received by the end of the first semester. Holds will be placed on the student’s account without official transcripts, affecting registration and transcript issuance.

Non-Affiliated K-12 Educators—K-12 educators, whose school is not affiliated with the Gilder Lehrman Institute should email onlinecourses@gilderlehrman.org to determine eligibility.

Terms and Deadlines—Students can apply for the following terms: Fall, Spring, Summer I or Summer II. The completed application deadline is two weeks prior to the start of each term. Deadlines are posted online and communicated via email. No extensions are available. Students missing deadlines must apply for a future entry term.
