Olivia Taylor ’25 explored a wide range of interests during her time at Gettysburg College, ultimately leading to an unexpected career path in political polling. Through experiences like Conversations for Change, she found ways to connect her passions and shape both her future and the campus community.
Upon graduation in May, Olivia Taylor ’25, from Cortlandt Manor, New York, is heading into the world of political polling. “I never would have considered this as a career had it not been for the opportunities I had at Gettysburg College,” she reflected.
A history major and triple minor in anthropology, public history, and Civil War era studies, Taylor has excelled at Gettysburg. She is a pole vaulter on the track and field team, secretary of Student Senate, president of College Republicans, a Civil War Institute fellow, an intern in the Admissions Office, and a member of three honors societies.
Taylor was drawn to Gettysburg after touring campus three times—each visit reaffirming what she had heard about our tight-knit, welcoming community. “Everyone I encountered, from the track coach to professors to tour guides, was so open and excited to share their experience,” she said. “Even before I enrolled, I emailed Prof. Birkner and got a response within hours. His receptiveness stuck with me.”
Looking back on her numerous campus roles, one experience stands out to Taylor. As the student coordinator for Conversations for Change—a campus initiative focused on fostering dialogue across difference—Taylor helped to design events, bring in a wide range of speakers, and create spaces for meaningful conversations during the election season.
“It wasn’t just about being bipartisan,” she explained. “We brought together students from different identities, ideologies, and backgrounds, including international students. Being on the ground floor of this during an election year was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done.”
Taylor originally thought she would become a high school history teacher, but the freedom to explore a breadth of interests opened her eyes to new possibilities.“I’ve always loved being involved in the political world,” she said. “Not being limited in my campus involvement has been so impactful.”
After connecting with Public Opinion Strategies at the Gettysburg College Job & Internship Fair, Taylor stayed in touch and ultimately landed a post-graduate role as a research analyst.
