My Story from Global Study:
I was given the opportunity to travel alone to conduct an independent study. This, I would have to say is way up there on my top 5 best experiences. I interviewed dermatologists, patients, social workers, activists and groups of women and men on how they see colorism playing a role in society and how it may lead to health implications. During my research time, I stayed at a hostel, met some of the most wonderful people there, built bonds and shared experiences with new individuals that I now consider to be my family. My time abroad was simply outstanding.
I think my favorite part about India was meeting my family. With my homestay, I was fortunate enough to find another family across the world. They did not simply become people I would live with for a few months, they became much more than that. We grew to have an irreplaceable relationship and bond with one another. I now have a second mother. Her name is Pooja-ji. And I now also have three new sisters: Hana, Dhriti, and Ayushi. And these are just the people I lived with! I built fundamental, loving friendships through classes and personal exploration. Every individual during my journey was a fundamental part of my personal growth, they guided, and cared immensely every step of the way. And for that I am so thankful.
My Advice for Future Students: Don't be afraid to try new things! You need to keep an open mind no matter where you go in the world. Don’t do you yourself the disservice of missing out on opportunities because of fear or hesitation. All within reason of course! If your visa lets you, and you can afford it, take a week or two after your program ends to travel alone! You won’t regret it. I promise you. When else will you get this opportunity again? Take advantage!
