Emily Walsh

Class Year: 2025 Emily Walsh

Major/Minor: East Asian Studies - Chinese Culture Track

Program: IES Salamanca, Spain

Identities I can speak to students about: Being the only student in your program

Program specific experiences I can speak about: Lived in a homestay, enrolled in a course at a local university, volunteered in the host community, took a course primarily in a language other than English

Favorite experience:
The time spent volunteering at Oxfam and the independent travel I completed (both in country and out)

What course/internship experience during your global study semester allowed you to learn something new and exciting?
Volunteering at Oxfam because I learned many new colloquial phrases and things about local’s daily life.

How have your global studies related to one of the 7 Enduring Skills?
My experience abroad increased my adaptability because when I arrived in Spain I was nervous about not being able to integrate into the local communicate, navigate the city, or interact with the locals. By the end on my time abroad I was expertly doing all 3 things and was able to have great conversations with my coworkers, professors, and host family in Spanish. I was able to adapt to many situations I had never though of before like navigating public transportation alone, and have evolved into a more capable and independent person.
