Favorite experience:
Meeting new people was one of my favorite experiences about going abroad. It was so exciting to meet someone from an entirely different background and be able to talk about different aspects of our lives. I developed so many close relationships to the people I met while abroad, and I still keep in touch with some of them.
What course/internship experience during your global study semester allowed you to learn something new and exciting?
The history class I took on the Second World War at Lancaster University gave me more insight into various European countries. It was also interesting to see how Europeans view the Second World War and to learn the material from the perspective of the Europeans.
How have your global studies related to one of the 7 Enduring Skills?
My global studies significantly increased my ability to adapt to a situation. One of the big differences between Gettysburg College and the local university that I was enrolled in during my time abroad is the size of the campus. The school that I was at while abroad was significantly bigger than Gettysburg College. I had to learn to adjust to the bigger campus size and familiarize myself with the various buildings throughout campus. Additionally, the university had a very different approach to classes. The classes were divided into different components such as lecture, workshop, and seminar. This took some time to get used to, but by the end of the semester, I was completely adjusted to this system. The classes were also held in different rooms for each session, which was quite interesting. The university is quite separated from the city center, so I usually took a bus to get to the city since it was much faster than spending an hour to walk to the city. It took quite a while to get used to how the buses operate since I typically do not use public transportation in the United States. I had to memorize different bus stops and routes that I could use, but there was an app for the bus which helped considerably. Overall, I really enjoyed my time abroad, and I learned a lot about myself that I do not think I would have realized had I not gone abroad.
