Favorite experience:
My favorite experience in my global study location was exploring the city on foot. Despite transportation being as cheap as 38 cents to ride the train or bus, walking was my biggest takeaway. It allowed me to discover the culture within the streets, seeing people dance flamenco, admiring the narrow yet beautiful streets, and noticing the ceramic street name signs embedded in the walls. Every walk felt like an adventure.
What course/internship experience during your global study semester allowed you to learn something new and exciting?
The course El Voluntariado (Volunteering) wasn’t originally in my plans since it was from 4 to 5, but after attending, it was truly life changing. Unlike a traditional class where you just sit and listen, this course was all about doing. We learned a lot about Spain, its history and current issues, but the real learning came from hands-on experiences. As part of the course, we had to volunteer with an organization, and I chose an animal refuge with cats and dogs alongside local students from Sevilla. I met amazing people, bonded with so many animals, and felt so happy whenever one got adopted. Spending time with and caring for the animals made the experience even more meaningful.
How have your global studies related to one of the 7 Enduring Skills?
My study abroad experience supported me in increasing my adaptability. Going to Spain, I had to step out of my comfort zone to fully embrace the culture. From adapting to the later eating schedule and taking a daily siesta to enjoying tapas at restaurants, I learned to appreciate the little things. I immersed myself in the culture by watching flamenco performances, visiting churches, walking through vibrant markets, and learning about the passion for football. Each experience helped me adapt to a new lifestyle and appreciate the cultural differences that make Spain so unique. I'm taking away not just everything I learned in Spain, but also a new perspective on where I live and go to school. I'm used to always going to the same spots with friends and family, but this experience taught me to explore more, look around with curiosity, and be willing to learn new things.
