Favorite experience:

There are so many it would be unfair to pick one. My overall experience abroad was so fantastic and life-changing. One of the greatest experiences would be staying with my homestay family, and having the great fortune of being immersed into Ghanaian culture. Going to family parties, learning to cook delicious dishes, learning various dances, and listening to Ghanaian and Afro-beats music. Also spending time with my host siblings was super fun, whether it was playing soccer, them teaching me Ga (their local language), playing with the neighborhood kids, helping them with homework, etc.

What course/internship experience during your global study semester allowed you to learn something new and exciting?

The second month abroad, we traveled throughout Ghana, visiting various regions and how these various cultures are a part of Ghana and the historical role they have. Towards the end of the month excursion, as a program, we visited the Cape Coast Dungeon which was a prominent force in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. It was a daunting, but important experience, seeing where slaves were held, and mistreated, and in the end, sold to the Americas. It ended up being where I did my Independent Study Project.

How have your global studies related to one of the 7 Enduring Skills?

Being in Ghana for the spring semester of my junior year has positively affected my intercultural fluency. In this program, the main purpose was cultural immersion in Ghanaian culture and society. By staying with Ghanaian families, we were able to see first-hand how life is in Ghana, especially in the capital, Accra. In addition, all the students had different families which further emphasized the difference in culture and ways of life depending on each family. Ghanaian society is very different from the United States and there had to be adaption as it was new. However, I gained the skills to adapt quickly and in the process, loving the cultural differences and the beauty of Ghanaian society.
