March 2024
Hello Parents,
Residence Halls Close Sunday, May 12 at noon
As we prepare for the end of this academic year, we would like to let you know about some important dates and closing processes. Our halls close on Sunday, May 12, at noon. Late departure students, such as athletes, will receive hall closing information via email.
Key Return
We ask that you please assist us by reminding your student to return their housing key(s) before leaving campus. If the key(s) are not returned, there is a minimum of $150 charge per key for changing the lock(s).
Summer Storage
Gettysburg College does not provide on-campus storage for students. There are several other storage options available, including a company that we've partnered with, "Ship-My-Room." For more details about storage options over the summer, please visit our website.
Give It Up For Good Sale
As your student is packing to go home, also remind them to donate any unwanted items to the Give It Up For Good Sale. Each year the College collects reusable items from students and hosts a large community sale in Hauser Field House on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Everything is sold for below-thrift-store prices to benefit the United Way Community Impact fund, which benefits the Adams County community directly and prevents tons of items from going into our landfills.
Disability Accommodations/Air Conditioning Requests
As we plan for next year, I’d like to share some information about Disability Accommodations. The Center for Student Success provides support for students with disabilities related to housing as well as academic needs. Each year we have some students who need special housing accommodations due to chronic medical conditions. Through the Disability Accommodations process, we work with students to provide them with reasonable accommodations that meet their needs. Any students who believe they have needs should refer to the accommodations process as soon as possible to ensure that we are able to meet approved needs.
In addition to room-type needs, we receive requests for air conditioning due to allergies, asthma, and other health conditions. Please note that not all of our residence halls are air conditioned. All new requests for disability accommodations related to air conditioning for the 2024-2025 academic year must be submitted to the Center for Student Success by July 1. All forms received after this date will be reviewed, but accommodations may not be in place (e.g. air conditioner installed) before the student's arrival on campus in August.
Housing Selection for the 2024-2025 Academic Year
Some housing selection processes for the next academic year are currently happening, including applications for College Houses and rostering for Greek Houses. The online housing selection lottery occurs in April. Please visit the Residential Education website for detailed information on all of the housing selection processes.
Off-Campus Living
Our office sometimes receives questions from students interested in renting their own property off-campus. Gettysburg College is a residential college and all full-time students are required to live on campus during their undergraduate years. Students acknowledge this policy through the Housing License Agreement via the Upperclass and First-Year Dashboards each year. The decision to hold an Off-Campus Housing process is made annually and is based on two factors: The College’s student enrollment and housing inventory. It is important for students of all class years to remember that they should not sign a lease to live in the community until they are formally approved to be released from their residency requirement. The College will continue to make decisions regarding off-campus housing in the late Fall semester each year.
I hope you find this information helpful and please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Residential Education if you have any further questions.
Sincerely,
Danielle Phillips
Director of Residential Education
