Academic Focus: Latin American women's issues and movements

Nathalie Lebon's work on Brazilian women’s movements, and in particular on the process of professionalization, has been published in journals such as Organization and Estudos Feministas. Most recently, she has published “Beyond Confronting the Myth of Racial Democracy: The Role of Afro-Brazilian Women Scholars and Activists” in Latin American Perspectives in 2007. She is coeditor (with Elizabeth Maier) of De lo Privado a lo Público: 30 Años de Lucha Ciudadana de las Mujeres en América Latina (Siglo Veintiuno, Mexico, 2006) and Women’s Activism in Latin America and the Caribbean: Engendering Social Justice, Democratizing Citizenship (Rutgers University Press, 2010). Her current research focuses on the consolidation of popular and black feminisms in Brazil and the role played by professionalization and institutionalization in this process. She is a member of the Latin American Studies Program Advisory Council.
