Gettysburg College students networked with alumni, parents, and friends of the college during an intensive three-day career-building event aimed at helping students to create their own career network.
More than a dozen students met with professionals working in law, medicine, insurance, government, business, and the green industry to learn about different types of careers and have in-depth discussions. The students also had dinner each night with alumni and parent groups, including recent Gettysburg College graduates involved in B.O.L.D. – ‘Burgians Of the Last Decade.
Through panel discussions, roundtable discussions, site visits, and an interactive case study, students met and spoke with more than 25 alumni and parents working for Liberty Mutual Insurance, Nixon Peabody LLP, Boston Spine Group, American Dental Partners, The Green Roundtable, and The Victory Group. The group also visited Boston University School of Management and the Boston Public Garden.
"Networking is such an important skill for effective job searching, especially in a tight job market," said Kathy Williams, director at the Center for Career Development and co-leader of the students in Boston. "Boston is a ‘hot spot' where many young alums have congregated over the past few years. Students often underestimate the power of networking, or believe that they don't possess the knowledge to network. But during a program like this, they get to practice their skills as they meet with different individuals. At the end of the program, they realize that they have developed a network that they can continue to utilize well beyond their time at Gettysburg."
The program is known on campus as Bright Lights! Big City! (BLBC). It introduces Gettysburg College students to successful alumni and parents in a particular metropolitan area. BLBC has been running for five years and has also taken students to New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Trips have explored careers in the sciences, arts, arts management, non-profits, public service, Wall Street, food, fashion, event planning, and advertising.
