Gettysburg’s Guided Pathways: A journey of growth and reflection for Arina Zheliaskova ’28

Through Gettysburg College’s Guided Pathways program, Arina Zheliaskova ’28 connects her academics, co-curricular experiences, and personal growth using reflection and mentorship to make the most of every opportunity.

As a double major in business, organizations, and management (BOM) and communication studies, Arina Zheliaskova ’28 of St. Petersburg, Russia, describes how the Guided Pathways program has supported her work as a student at Gettysburg and helped her navigate her college journey with purpose.

What inspired you to participate in the Guided Pathways?

“I was really looking forward to finding meaningful and supportive opportunities that Gettysburg could offer. I thought the Guided Pathways might give me a clearer sense of direction in my academic and extracurricular goals. I also felt that having extra guidance would make a difference in how I perform and grow throughout college.”

What were some of the experiences you’ve had with the Eisenhower Institute that you’ve applied to your progress in the Guided Pathways?

“Last semester, I participated in an engaging and eye-opening Eisenhower Institute program called Inside Washington. Our focus was on the first 100 days of the new presidential administration and how new laws and policies shape the government’s direction. As someone who isn’t a political science major and is an international student, it was especially inspiring to learn more about how the U.S. government system functions.

“What made the program even more meaningful were the professional connections and real-world experiences it offered. We traveled to Washington D.C., where we met with experts working in different areas of government and policy. I think the main takeaway from these conversations was a behind-the-scenes look at how decisions are made on Capitol Hill. Our final immersion trip was one of my favorite parts: We visited the Library of Congress, the Capitol, and other significant places around the District. It was truly a memorable experience that expanded my understanding of professional growth, which I’ve carried into my Guided Pathways journey.”

“Guided Pathways is a good supportive tool that helps you organize your ideas and turn your broader aspirations into concrete goals. It’s about getting clarity on where you want to go and having a structure that helps you get there.”

How did meeting with your co-curricular advisor help you to chart your progress through the Guided Pathways?

“After my first meeting with my co-curricular advisor, I realized how helpful it was to have someone guiding me through my goals each semester. It honestly felt a bit like a reflective “check-in” or even a therapy session, a moment to look at what I’ve accomplished and what I want to do next. These meetings helped me stay intentional about my college experience, making sure I was not only keeping up with my academics but also growing personally and professionally.”

How did you approach your Guided Pathways reflections?

“I approached my reflections by looking back at what I’ve accomplished so far in different areas of my college life. I tried to think about how each experience, especially the immersion projects I joined during my first year, helped shape my skills, interests, and perspective. I focused on what I learned from those experiences, how I grew from them, and what they revealed about the kind of goals I want to set for myself moving forward.”

What would you say to students who are considering participating in the Guided Pathways?

“I would encourage them to do it. The Guided Pathways are a good supportive tool that helps you organize your ideas and turn your broader aspirations into concrete goals. It’s about getting clarity on where you want to go and having a structure that helps you get there. It’s a great way to stay intentional about your college experience and make the most of every opportunity Gettysburg offers.”
