Student Learning Outcomes

CLASSICS Major Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • understand the cultures, societies, and history of the ancient Mediterranean world through different kinds of evidence.
  • use the ancient Mediterranean world to think about the modern era, and analyze ways that moderns have received ancient Greek and Roman cultures and have deployed them for ideological purposes.
  • use their knowledge of the ancient Mediterranean world to address questions in other disciplines, and use methods and inquiries from other disciplines in their interpretation of the ancient Mediterranean world.
  • develop skills of close reading and textual analysis through careful engagement with ancient Greek and Latin literature in the original language and/or in translation.
  • exhibit expertise regarding a selected body of ancient texts and/or material remains and modern approaches to the study of these materials.
  • formulate meaningful, evidence-based conclusions and effectively communicate them through essays, discussions, presentations, and performances.

CLASSICS Minor Learning Outcomes

Students will:

LATIN Minor Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • learn the fundamentals of Latin and be able to read a significant quantity of authentic ancient prose and poetic texts, and use appropriate scholarly tools for the analysis of these texts.
  • express something meaningful based on evidence and communicate it to others in ways that can be understood through essays, discussions, presentations, and performances.

GREEK Minor Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • learn the fundamentals of ancient Greek and be able to read a significant quantity of authentic ancient prose and poetic texts, and use appropriate scholarly tools for the analysis of these texts.
  • express something meaningful based on evidence and communicate it to others in ways that can be understood through essays, discussions, presentations, and performances.
