Experience Mathematics

At Gettysburg College, studying mathematics is more than mastering formulas—it’s about experiencing the beauty, creativity, and power of mathematics in a liberal arts environment. Whether you're fascinated by abstract structures or solving real-world quantitative problems, the mathematics program combines rigorous theory with practical application.

Our department is intentionally small, with just 9 full‑time faculty guiding 15–20 majors and 10–12 minors annually, ensuring personalized mentorship, small class sizes (10–30 students), and close faculty‑student collaboration. As a math major, you’ll engage in independent research projects, often leading to conference presentations or publications.

Students studyingMathematics students at Gettysburg gain fluency in powerful computational tools—R, Mathematica, MATLAB—that prepare them for careers across fields, including data science, finance, education, engineering, government, and beyond. Our alumni include cryptographers, actuarial analysts, software developers, engineers, educators, and more.

You’ll also benefit from ample resources: the Donna Brogan Center for Quantitative Learning offers 24‑hour peer workshops and tutoring. Departmental events like the Mathematics Colloquium bring in guest speakers from institutions such as the NSA, Penn State, and the Courant Institute.

From calculus to capstone thesis, Gettysburg’s math curriculum is structured to support growing ambition. Early choices in your first year are guided by clear placement advice and advising support. Majors complete a senior capstone, usually a research thesis, culminating years of inquiry and discovery.

In short: Gettysburg offers an immersive, collaborative, and dynamic mathematical experience that blends liberal‑arts breadth with analytical depth. If you're passionate about exploring theoretical ideas, diving into data, or building a versatile skill set for the future, the mathematics program here invites you to do great work.

Colloquium Series

Several times every semester we host a popular Mathematics Colloquium, featuring speakers from places such as the US Naval Academy, Bucknell University, Haverford College, Courant Institute, Penn State, and the NSA. Topics generally cover current research in specified disciplines of mathematics, often relating to other disciplines across the college such as physics, biology, computer science, psychology, economics, philosophy, art and music. After the talks students have the opportunity for further discussion with the speaker, sometimes leading to undergraduate research, an internship, or a potential job lead down the line.
