What can you do with a Sociology degree from Gettysburg College?

A better question: What can’t you do? Sociology is an incredibly flexible degree. From law school to law enforcement, from data analysis to digital marketing, Gettysburg’s sociology graduates are highly successful in finding gainful, meaningful employment. Students receive exemplary training in critical thinking, research methodologies, and multi-media communication. You will not only benefit from a rigorous, well-rounded liberal arts education, but learn the adaptability, resiliency, intercultural competencies, and time management skills that are essential in the modern, 21st century workplace.

Data Occupations

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported that data occupations—including statisticians, research analysts, and marketing specialists—will be among the fastest growing employment sectors throughout the next decade. With your strong training in research and data analysis, coupled with your deep understanding of social forces and institutions, you’ll be able to easily tap into this job growth.

Employment Opportunities

In addition to the data sciences, sociology graduates also find employment in sales and marketing; policy and law; education; and more service-related fields like social work and nonprofit advocacy. The American Sociological Association (ASA) provides a set of excellent resources for sociology students exploring career options.

Graduate and Professional Study

Though most of our sociology students enter the job market directly after graduation, many choose to pursue an advanced degree at some point. If you’re interested in graduate school, reach out to your faculty and advisor early in your Gettysburg career so that you can form durable mentoring relationships. Your faculty can help guide your interests—not to mention write letters of recommendation—as you navigate the graduate application process.
