Eisenhower Institute Generative AI Policy
The Eisenhower Institute values authentic, intellectual engagement and original thought. While generative AI tools can be valuable as a thought partner, they must never replace your own critical thinking, creativity, or voice.
Our Stance
Generative AI may only be used for Eisenhower Institute programs in specific, disclosed ways. Acceptable uses include light brainstorming, clarifying language, or exploring alternative ways to frame an argument. Your experiences, ideas, analysis, and writing must be your own.
Generative AI may only be used for Eisenhower Institute programs in specific, disclosed ways. Acceptable uses include light brainstorming, clarifying language, or exploring alternative ways to frame an argument. Your experiences, ideas, analysis, and writing must be your own.
If you choose to use AI for any project, application, or written material, you must:
- Disclose its use before submitting your work.
- Name the tool and explain precisely how it contributed to your work.
Generative AI may NOT be used to:
- Produce or rewrite substantial sections of your deliverable.
- Conduct your analysis or research.
- Generate ideas, arguments, charts, or images that are presented as your own.
In some circumstances, Eisenhower Institute experts may provide additional requirements and/or restrictions regarding the use of AI. In cases where the expert’s guidance is more restrictive than this policy, students must adhere to those requirements.
Program Applications
Application materials must be created by you and reflect your own experiences, perspectives, and writing abilities. AI may not be used to generate ideas for you or produce the text that becomes part of your submission.
Submissions that merely copy the prompt into a generative AI tool will result in generic, impersonal responses. Using AI beyond the limited scope described above undermines both the fairness of the application process and your ability to present yourself accurately. Impersonal responses will not be competitive in the application process and may result in your application not being selected.
AI Use in Writing Samples
Writing samples are designed to accurately represent your writing abilities. Any writing samples submitted to the Eisenhower Institute must be your original work. Undisclosed use of AI is considered a misrepresentation of your writing and may result in the consequences outlined below.
Final Projects & Program Deliverables
Final projects and deliverables represent both your individual work and the Eisenhower Institute’s standards. The Institute regularly shares student projects on EI blogs, websites, and social media. Therefore, the use of generative AI in final deliverables is prohibited, except in the very limited circumstances outlined above.
Failure to disclose AI use is considered a violation of academic and professional integrity. Such conduct reflects poorly on both you and the Institute, and may result in the consequences outlined below.
Misuse & Consequences
Failure to comply with this policy is considered a violation of Eisenhower Institute standards. Your work may be referred to the Gettysburg College Honor Commission for further review. Consequences may include the rejection of your deliverable, dismissal from the program, exclusion from future Eisenhower Institute programs, or other disciplinary measures determined by the Institute or the College.
Why This Matters
The work you create for the Institute reflects on you and on the Eisenhower Institute. Inappropriate use of AI could damage the Institute’s reputation. As a member of our community, you should take pride in your ability to contribute original thoughts to important policy discussions.
Our programs are designed to help you build the skills that leaders need in a rapidly changing world. Overreliance on AI erodes those skills. Treat AI as a partner for your thinking, not as a stand-in for it.
