About the Donor

Susan Biernat '77 established this fund in honor of her husband, Joseph A. Biernat, Jr. '75, Trustee of Gettysburg College.

More Information

Although Joe has enjoyed a successful career as a finance analyst, he has maintained an interest in the environment and his undergraduate degree was in biology. Susan explains, “Recently he has been working diligently to help establish a company in the environmental sector that could have a measurable impact in the area of climate change. Endowing a fund to support acquisitions in environmental studies seemed like an appropriate fit.”

Louis and Claudia Schatanoff Fund

About the Donors

Louis Schatanoff (1905-1959) was born in Russia and brought to the US at the age of one. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1931, and practiced medicine in New Freedom Township, Pennsylvania, until his death. He and his wife Claudia (1904-1986) had two sons, Joseph and David, Class of 1955, both of whom also became doctors.

Their granddaughter, Sandra Schatanoff, is also a Gettysburg graduate, Class of 1997.

Kenneth L. Smoke Fund

About the Donors

The fund was established in 1971 by the faculty of the Gettysburg College Psychology Department in honor of Kenneth L. Smoke, the department’s founder and long-time chair.

More Information

Dr. Smoke (1903-1970) taught philosophy at Gettysburg College in 1927-1929. He switched to psychology and taught at Juniata College before returning to Gettysburg in 1946, chairing the department he founded until his death. His wife was Lillian Smoke, college librarian from 1959 to 1974.
