About the Donors
Mary Pennell Simmons, Richard Pennell, and Edred Pennell, Jr. established the fund in 1989 as a memorial to their parents, Edred J. and Ruth Glenn Pennell.

Edred Joseph Pennell (1890-1949) graduated from Gettysburg College in 1912, served in the US Army during World War I, and had a long and distinguished legal career. Ruth Glenn Pennell (1893-1989) was active in Pennsylvania state politics. The Pennell children donated Edred’s vast personal library to Gettysburg College, with the sale of portions of the collection being used to establish a permanent memorial endowment.

The fund was established by Frederick Weiser (Class of 1957) in honor of his father, Donald Weiser (Class of 1924).
More Information
Donald K. Weiser (1902-1992) was born in Gettysburg and attended its namesake high school. At Gettysburg College, he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi, whose house is named for him. Most of his career was spent as a general manager for Aetna Life and Casualty in Chicago. He retired to Gettysburg and became a longtime trustee of the college. His son Frederick donated a number of wood figurines to the college library, where they are often on display.
