Overview
This summer, the Center for Public Service (CPS) will offer an exciting new international fellowship opportunity in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, centered on the theme of Energy Transition to clean burning, low-carbon, renewable fuels and Climate Finance. The fellowship provides students with an immersive, hands-on experience working with local and international partners to advance clean cooking, renewable energy deployment, data collection, impact monitoring, and climate finance.
Fellows will explore how access to clean and affordable cooking energy improves public health, quality of life, and supports the social and economic integration of low-income communities in Tanzania's rapidly growing cities. The experience provides students with exposure to an important climate change mitigation strategy, which uses carbon finance, household energy, and market research and development, linking local innovation and international cooperation with global sustainability goals.
Fellows stay in homestays, coordinated by our hosts, which is paid for by the Fellowship.
This experience is fully-funded by a generous gift from Jim Heston '70. Gettysburg Fellows receive a stipend of $3,500.
Partners Organizations
Fellows will work with Consumer's Choice Limited (CCL), a Tanzanian women-led small business spearheading ethanol fuel and stove distribution in Dar es Salaam and other Tanzanian cities. and CLEANCOOK Sweden AB, a Swedish stove manufacturing company situated in East Africa. Project Gaia, an international nonprofit organization promoting the use of alcohol fuels and clean energy solutions across Africa, serves as advisor to these businesses and will provide training and follow-up for the Fellows.
The work of CCL, CCS, and Project Gaia has been sponsored in Tanzania by UNIDO, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, under a U.N. Global Environmental Facility (GEF) grant. More about the program is available here:
