Safety and well-being
Department of public safety (DPS)
DPS is available 24/7 and can be reached at (717) 337-6912 or (717) 337-6911. Please contact them for emergencies and also reporting. They are located on Stevens Street across from the Admission Building parking lot.
Community Concern forms will continue to be reviewed and as is the practice, not to be used for emergencies. If it is an emergency, you should contact DPS directly.
Health Services is working remotely with hours 9 am to 3 pm, during those hours they will be checking their number ((717) 337-6970) for messages. Please leave a number where you can be reached, and be sure to empty your voice mailbox so that they can get in touch with you if you are not answering your phone.
You will be receiving a secure message in Medicat every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: Health Services Check-in to assess how you are feeling. Please read and respond as we will be monitoring responses frequently during the day.
Resources in the Community for minor illness or Emergencies:
- Wellspan Urgent care: (717) 339-2875 or call 6911 (DPS) or 911.
- Health Service Nurse Practitioners will have an On Call number that can utilized by calling DPS for illness-related concerns after 3 pm.
Self-care and covid-19 symptoms
If you develop any of these symptoms, as identified by the Center for Disease Control, please stay in your room and contact Health Services immediately (717-337-6970) during business hours of 9am-3pm. If it is after that time, please contact DPS directly.
- Shortness of breath
- Cover your coughs and sneezes
- Cover: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
- Dispose: Throw used tissues in a lined trash can.
- Wash hands: Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
- Hand sanitizer: If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, covering all surfaces of your hands and rubbing them together until they feel dry.
- Avoid touching: Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Clean your hands often
Social distancing expectations
All policies and expectations outlined in your existing housing contract are still in effect in your new housing assignment, along with your responsibilities under the Gettysburg College Student Code of Conduct. Additional expectations are in place based on the context of the COVID-19 public health crisis.
Students who remain on campus through the end of the spring semester are expected to practice and abide by all COVID-19 public health guidelines. Here is general guidance for individuals residing on campus:
Follow social distancing guidance
- Do not travel to areas of campus where you do not have access.
- Do not host guests from off campus including other Gettysburg students who are not approved to remain in residence.
- Keep a distance of at least 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters) between yourself and others. Please be particularly considerate of this distance with staff working in your building/on campus.
- Avoid all unnecessary physical contact with others.
- Do not congregate in groups larger than 10.
Follow CDC and WHO Best Practices
- Follow CDC guidelines for effective handwashing: 20 seconds with soap and water.
- Practice proper coughing/sneezing practices.
- Avoid touching your face.
- Dispose of any items coming into contact with your mouth.
Communicate Your Needs to Professional Staff at Gettysburg
- Use the Gettysburg College Coronavirus Repsonse website to stay informed and up to date.
- Communicate your needs or concerns to appropriate support staff.Report urgent issues and emergencies to DPS by calling 717.337.6911.
Hours of operation: 9:00am-3:00pm, all via remote. All routine appointments will be remote via HIPAA-compliant ZOOM. Students should phone the Counseling Office. They may not have a live person on phones, so students should be prepared to leave a message with their contact information. Counseling staff will reach out to schedule an appointment. Students will receive information about connecting with staff via ZOOM at their appointment time. Counseling staff continue to be on-call for emergencies and will handle remotely or in-person as clinical care dictates. Contact Counseling Services at 717.337.6960.
Dining Services is looking forward to assisting you with your meal needs. Your health and the health of our Dining Staff is our most important focus. Therefore, it is necessary to change the style of service until further noticebeginning Friday, March 20, 2020. Lunch and dinner meals will be provided at the Grill on Lincoln in a to-go format. A dine-in option is not available. All other dining locations including the Bullet Hole, Commons, and Dive are closed until further notice. You will need your Gettysburg College ID card to obtain your meal. Your meal plan includes meal swipes only (no guest passes or Dining $’s).
- If you are feeling ill, please do not go out to restaurants or order take-out. The Dining Center will provide for your food needs. Please contact them at the above email.
- Please check the Dining Service website frequently for the most up to date meal serving times as they may change.
- Dining Hours are currently as follows: Monday – Sunday, 11:30 am – 1:00 pm & 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm, at the Grill on Lincoln entrance.
- Lunch and dinner meals will include a menu of hot and cold foods. Breakfast items and snacks are available at dinner.
- Those students with food allergies must contact Dining Services at OnlineDiningServicesAdmin@gettysburg.edu. This email is the best way communicate with Dining Services as our offices are not staffed.
- Thank you for your understanding during these difficult times. Dining Services, in consultation with College Leadership, will constantly monitor these changing events and may alter levels of service. Our hope is to return to a somewhat normal service as circumstances allow.
Jaeger Center and Field House
Both facilities are closed, and there is no student access at this time.
The following locations have laundry facilities available: Albaugh, Colonial, Lamp Post, Paxton, and Smyser.
Access to the laundry app remains unchanged.
Please note that academic buidlings are closed and not accessible at this time. You should continue to work on your academics remotely and not attempt to enter any academic buildings.

Academic Advising and Accommodations
- What if I need to speak with someone? Will the Office of Academic Advising be available during the remainder of the semester?
- YES!! Our office is currently open during normal business hours (8 am- 4:30 pm) and we are available by phone and email during this time. If you need to arrange to speak to someone outside of our normal hours because of time zone differences, please submit an appointment request and we will arrange a time to speak with you. If we move to working from home, you can still reach us by phone/email.
- If you would like to make an appointment with one of the Deans, please complete an appointment request and we will set up a phone call (or video call if you prefer) with the appropriate person who may best answer your questions or concerns.
- Additional resources can be found on the college website in regards to distance learning and the Coronavirus, on the Academic Advising webpage, as well as in the article “Remote Learning and College Students with Learning Disabilities”.
- Will my IEAP still be honored?
- Yes – Your accommodation plan will still be active and implemented during the distance learning environment. We can provide electronic copies to you if needed.
- Will I still get extra time on my exams?
- Yes – Your professor and the IT department will work together to coordinate the best practice when it comes to accommodating extended time on exams and quizzes.
- I have the accommodation of having a copy of classmate’s notes – will I continue to receive these?
- Yes and this will continue to be coordinated through your professor. The process for getting the notes to you may change, but you will still receive a copy.
- I feel that I may need additional accommodations during the distance learning format – what do I do?
- The accommodation process will not change on our end. If a student feels that an additional accommodation is needed they will go through the request process and – if indicated – will provide new supporting documentation. Once reviewed, if warranted, the new accommodation will be added to the IEAP.
- I receive weekly or biweekly Academic Coaching – will this continue?
- Yes – If you currently meet with an Academic Coach, this service will continue via phone call or video chat (whatever your preference) during your scheduled day and time. If time zone differences affect your normal scheduling, we will work with to find an alternate time that will work for you.
Gettysburg College Bookstore is closed until further notice.

G-Tech and Information Technology
Currently Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:00pm. Please note that these hours may change, so please call ahead if you need direct assistance.
If you need Remote Instruction assistance: IT staff may be able to assist you over the phone, via email, or by using remote technologies. Contact IT by logging into CNAV and clicking the link “Remote Instruction Help Request.” This form will be available as of noon on Thursday, March 19, 2020. We will follow up on requests in the order they are received.
IT staff are prepared to work with you around questions relating to:
- Access to college accounts and resources
- Using Zoom or other tools your professors may be using
- Your computer or internet access
The library will be closed on March 22 and until further notice.
Students residing on campus may use the REQUEST feature in MUSCAT. We will retrieve books from the stacks and provide an email alert, explaining how to pick up your items.
The library will not be open for individual study, printing, group work or congregating space.
- The library will provide the same remote research assistance to the approved on-campus students as it does for online learners who have returned home.
- The library staff will work with all students to ensure that as many scholarly resources and services as possible are accessible remotely. Information on library resources and services will be updated regularly on the Musselman Library Services and Resources during Campus Closure Please do not hesitate to contact usif you need assistance accessing resources and services.

- How do I access materials?
- You can still access online materials (e.g. articles, ebooks, streaming film) using MUSCAT Plus and library databases. If you want to read a print book the library owns, email email@example.com so a library staff member can talk through some options. For 24/7 access to primary sources materials from Special Collections and College Archives, visit the GettDigital Collections web page.
- How do I get research help?
- Librarians will be available to help from 9:00am–4:30pm EST on weekdays and from 6:00pm–9:00pm EST Sunday–Thursday. You can reach them by chat, email, or text during those times. If you email firstname.lastname@example.org our regular hours, someone will respond to you as soon as they can.
- What if I have other questions?
- Our campus closure guide provides more information about the availability of specificservices and resources.
- All incoming mail and packages will be placed in a locker.
- Students who are on campus will have card access to the CUB to pick up any mail between 9am – 12noon, Monday – Friday. Students can access the CUB through the door by the firepit.
