Dear Colleagues,
Over the course of the day, I’ve heard from several members of the community aware of a segment ABC27 aired yesterday evening on the challenges facing higher education in our region. During that broadcast, Dickinson College’s president spoke critically and inaccurately about the financial health of Gettysburg College. I have since been in touch with the president to express my disappointment about his comments and he has since conveyed his apologies to me.
ABC27 itself has acknowledged its error in including the comment. In a report this evening, it noted our Get Acquainted Day and also spoke to our financial strengths, including that by a Forbes measurement our finances place us in the top third of private Pennsylvania colleges and universities.
While the forces affecting higher education are well known and not distinctive to Gettysburg, I will repeat my profound admiration for the bold and forward-looking approach taken by our College. We are fortunate to have the resources, in both the talent of our people and in our available funds, to chart that future with confidence and ambition. Consider the many investments we have made this year alone—in multiple new majors, in a new graduate program, in our physical plant, and in our technological infrastructure. In short, our financial strength gives us the flexibility to continue investing in our students, our programs, our campus, and our future—even as we navigate a higher education environment that is challenging every college and university.
Gettysburg College will continue to be guided by our bedrock commitments to ethical action and respect, both within our community and beyond. As is true for everything we do here, those commitments are lived through the actions of each and every one of us. I am incredibly proud of this community and deeply grateful for who we are as Gettysburgians.
With appreciation,
Bob Iuliano
President
