Dear Campus Community,
Earlier this week, I shared that Carey Thompson will be stepping down as Vice President for Enrollment and Educational Services (EES) after four years of dedicated service. As I noted then, Carey will continue to lend his experience and perspective over the coming months to help ensure a smooth transition.
This moment in higher education—at Gettysburg and across the country—requires bold and creative approaches to long-standing challenges. Changing demographics, shifting student preferences, and increasing competition are prompting colleges everywhere to rethink how to address new and existing markets. As Carey and I were discussing his pending decision, I reflected this summer on the type of leader who could help us meet this moment—and quickly—with fresh perspective and determination.
With that important foundation in place, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Robert Schwartz ’92 as Gettysburg College’s Vice President for EES.
Robert is a Gettysburgian through and through—a third-generation Gettysburg graduate and a Trustee of the College for the past four and a half years. During his time on the Board, he has chaired our Enrollment and Educational Services Committee and contributed to our Gettysburg 2.0 work, while also serving on Advancement, Audit & Risk, Conservatory, Endowment, and Technology Committees. His love for this place is unquestioned.
Professionally, Robert brings a career in transformation and growth strategy at the highest levels, including senior executive roles at companies such as IBM and AT&T. His work has centered on leading organizations through complex change, creating new markets, and finding innovative ways to connect with audiences.
Although Robert’s professional path has not centered on higher education, his broad experience helping organizations thrive through challenging markets will bring an invaluable and innovative perspective to Gettysburg and to our efforts in recruiting the next generation of talented students to our campus. As I have said in various contexts, this moment calls on us to approach our work with creativity and a willingness to adapt. Joined with the talented EES team, Robert will help us meet this challenging moment in student recruitment with creativity, resolve, vision, and a clear eye on our mission and values.
Please join me in welcoming Robert to this vital new chapter in our work.
With gratitude,
Bob Iuliano
President
