Update on the Garthwait Leadership Center – May 29, 2019

The following message is being sent on behalf of David Brennan ’75, P’00, Chair, Gettysburg College Board of Trustees and Janet Morgan Riggs ’77, President:

Dear Campus Community:

In an email earlier this month, we let you know that at the May Board of Trustees meeting the Board unanimously approved the renaming principles prepared by the Naming Principles Advisory Group.

Following the adoption of these principles, the Board of Trustees formed an ad hoc committee, chaired by Trustee Charlie Scott ’77 P’09, P’12, to investigate the requests to consider renaming the Garthwait Leadership Center.

Upon this review, the ad hoc committee recommended to the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees that the Garthwait Leadership Center name be retained. Both the Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees approved retaining the name of the Garthwait Leadership Center.

A summary of the ad hoc committee’s work can be viewed here.

We would like to thank the ad hoc committee for their thorough and deliberate work and the Naming Principles Advisory Group for the principles that helped to guide us through this process.  We also extend our thanks to the many members of the campus community who participated in discussions about this issue during the course of the spring semester.

As an outcome of this work, the Board has encouraged the College to continue the discussion and education needed to reduce the occurrence of bias incidents and to facilitate the inclusive campus environment to which we aspire.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge Bob Garthwait’s cooperation throughout this process.  We are grateful for his continued commitment to Gettysburg College.

Sincerely,

David Brennan ’75, P’00
