The following message was sent on behalf of Carey Thompson, VP for Enrollment and Educational Services & Dean of Admission:
Dear Campus Community,
I write to share that Mike Mattia, Executive Director of Athletics and Recreation, has announced that he will be leaving Gettysburg College at the end of June to pursue a new opportunity in the private sector. While we are certainly sad to see Mike go, we are excited for him and his family as they begin this new chapter in their lives. We wish him the very best.
Mike joined Gettysburg in 2018, having served as Deputy Director of Athletics at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to this, Mike gained valuable experience in athletic administration and coaching at the University of Maryland, his alma mater Georgetown University, and Ursinus College.
During his time at Gettysburg, Mike has left an indelible mark on our athletics and recreation programs. Under his leadership, our teams have captured 12 Centennial Conference championships and made 35 NCAA tournament appearances. In the past three years alone, Mike has overseen the recruitment of a new generation of outstanding head coaches, following the retirement of a few longstanding leaders within our program.
Beyond varsity athletics, Mike has significantly expanded recreational and wellness opportunities for our students through the growth of club sports and intramurals. He has also played a pivotal role in advancing the Orange & Blue Club, with annual fundraising increasing by 82% during his tenure. Most recently, Mike helped guide the development and adoption of a new strategic plan for athletics and recreation, positioning our programs for future success.
Mike has also contributed meaningfully at the national level by serving in NCAA Division III governance and currently chairing the athletic directors within the Centennial Conference.
We are deeply grateful that Mike, his wife Anne, and their daughter Laura will remain in the area and continue their loyal support of the Bullets. I will be in touch with the community regarding the next steps in our process at a later date. Until then, please join me in thanking Mike for his dedicated service to Gettysburg College and in wishing him all the best in his future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Carey Thompson
