Renaming and Naming Principles Announcement – May 5, 2019

The following message is sent on behalf of David Brennan ’75, P’00, Chair, Board of Trustees:

Dear campus community:

As you may know, the Board of Trustees recently formed an advisory group charged with making recommendations related to renaming and naming principles at the College. In a previous message, Rich Scheff ’77, Trustee and Chair of the Naming Principles Advisory Group, laid out the charge of the group which was composed of trustees, faculty, staff, and students.

I’m writing today to let you know that on Friday, May 3, the advisory group delivered its proposed renaming principles to the Board of Trustees. The Board unanimously approved those principles. The principles were informed by a careful process that included research on how other institutions respond to similar issues, the listening sessions that were held on campus in April, and the survey responses we received related to this topic.

The full set of principles can be viewed here, along with an outline of the process to be used when a request is received to rename a building, structure, space, program, or scholarship/fellowship.

The Board now intends to use these principles and the related process in response to a request to consider renaming the Garthwait Leadership Center. An ad hoc committee, chaired by Trustee Charlie Scott ’77, P’09, P’12, has been formed to investigate the issue and make a recommendation to the Executive Committee of the Board of the Trustees. The full Board will make a final decision.

This committee will begin their work immediately, with the expectation that they will make their recommendation within the next few weeks.

I’d like to thank the campus community for their valuable insights into this important process.

Sincerely,

David Brennan ’75, P’00

Chair, Gettysburg College Board of Trustees
