Commitment to worth and dignity of all people – October 26, 2018

Dear members of the campus community,

Some of you have seen recent headlines regarding action under consideration by the federal government that would essentially derecognize transgender identity.  This action would result in withdrawal of the protection currently offered by the federal government to assure civil rights based on transgender identity. Some of you are understandably concerned about this possibility and wonder what it might mean for our campus policies.

I am writing to assure you that Gettysburg College has no plans to change its policies prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. You can access a copy of the College’s nondiscrimination policy here.

Gettysburg College remains committed to the worth and dignity of all people, as stated in the values underlying the College’s mission statement, and we will continue to uphold our policies affirming the rights of transgender students, employees, and alumni.

Sincerely,

Janet Morgan Riggs

President
