Sociology Major
Check Sheet
Ten courses are required for the SOC major:
One Introductory Courses
- One from SOC 101, 102, or 103 (must earn a C or better to continue in the major)
One Social Inequality Course
- One from SOC 202, 209, 217, 240, 243, or 244
Must be taken at Gettysburg College. Students may take multiple social inequalities courses. The first will fulfill the social inequality requirement; any additional courses will count towards the Sociology elective requirement.
Two Social Theory Courses
- SOC 296 (must earn a C or better to continue in the major; may only be taken once)
Must be taken at Gettysburg College. Students who do not meet the grade requirement must petition the department to repeat the course. - SOC 315 or 318
Must be taken at Gettysburg College. SOC 296 with a grade of C or better is a prerequisite. Students may take two seminars on Sociological Theory on different topics and with different course numbers. The first will fulfill the Seminar in Sociological Theory requirement the second will count as a Sociology elective.
Two Methods Courses
- SOC 298
- SOC 299
Both must be taken at Gettysburg College.
Three Sociology Elective Courses
- 3 courses from SOC 200-290 and also SOC 331
Students may transfer up to two Sociology elective courses, including courses taken during study abroad. Transfer courses require departmental approval.
Capstone Course
- SOC 400: Capstone Seminar
Must be taken at Gettysburg College
Notes
- No Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading allowed
- The department does not accept online courses towards the major
