Religious Studies Major

Nine courses in Religious Studies are required for the major.
REL 400 Capstone Experience or REL 460 Individualized Study - Capstone is required. The eight other courses are electives at the levels outlined below.
Two Courses in Religious Studies at Any Level
- 2 courses within the Religious Studies department, noted below as considered to be Religious Studies courses, or approved by the chairperson
Four Courses at the 200-level or Above
- 4 courses at the 200-level which are with the Religious Studies department, noted below as considered to be Religious Studies courses, or approved by the chairperson
Two Courses at the 300-level or Above
- 2 courses at the 300-level which are with the Religious Studies department, or approved by the chairperson
Capstone
- REL 400 Capstone Experience taken during Fall of student’s senior year or REL 460 Individualized Study with Religious Studies faculty member taken during Spring of student’s senior year.
Notes:
- The following FYS and IDS courses are automatically considered to be Religious Studies Courses: FYS 150, 192-3, IDS 214, 228 and 238.
- Students may petition the department to apply additional courses to the major that are taught outside the Religious Studies Department (at Gettysburg College, at other US institutions, or at study abroad programs. Requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. To petition for department approval, the student should email the department chairperson with their request as soon as possible.
