About Schmucker Art Gallery

Schmucker Art Gallery is a lively art space that displays eight to ten exhibitions each year in its Main Gallery and Project Space. Exhibitions feature works by local, national, and international contemporary artists, historical art from public and private collections, as well as objects curated from Gettysburg College’s permanent collection. Schmucker Art Gallery provides opportunities for Gettysburg College students to display their work in the annual Juried Student Exhibition and the Senior Art Majors Exhibition. As part of each exhibition, Schmucker Art Gallery hosts receptions, gallery talks and lectures by artists, curators, and scholars, and special events organized by student groups. The Gallery also encourages students at Gettysburg College and in the community to use the space for dynamic discussions and to create connections across disciplines.

Our Mission

The Schmucker Art Gallery at Gettysburg College seeks to enrich the cultural life on campus, in the community, and throughout the region. The Gallery’s goal is to organize and mount challenging and diverse exhibitions composed of student works, works from the permanent collection, borrowed works, and recently produced works by emerging contemporary artists. These exhibitions and the programming which accompanies them are intended to deepen the understanding of art, both historical and of our time, and to complement the college's visual arts curriculum and other interdisciplinary academic programs. The Gallery is a place where new ideas are explored, and where students are encouraged to discover, through the close study of actual objects, the past and continued cultural importance of artworks and art making. In addition, the Gallery serves as a training ground for student workers interested in pursuing a career in gallery administration or other museum-related fields.
