One Billion Rising
Thursday, February 14, 2019
4:30 p.m.- 5:30 p.m.
One Billion Rising is a global campaign to end violence against women, rise for justice, and promote gender equality. The campaign was initiated by playwright and activist Eve Ensler (known for her play The Vagina Monologues), and her organization V-Day in 2012. The "billion" refers to the UN statistic that one in three women will be raped or beaten in their lifetime, or about one billion women. In 2012, the One Billion Rising campaign culminated in the biggest mass global action to end violence against women ever with tens of thousands of events held in more than 190 countries.
The Vagina Monologues
Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February 23, 2019
7:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.
The Vagina Monologues, written by playwright and activist Eve Ensler, is an award-winning play based on over 200 interviews Ensler conducted with women about their experiences and memories with their sexuality. Each monologue deals with an aspect of the female experience, touching on matters such as sex, love, rape, menstruation, female genital mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, sexual orientation, and social stigmas. This ground-breaking play inspired V-Day, a global movement that has raised millions of dollars for groups working to end violence against women and girls. All proceeds are donated to Survivors, Inc. of Gettysburg.
