Spanish

The Spanish Department offers courses and other opportunities designed to help you understand the Spanish language and gain insight into the world's Spanish-speaking people and cultures. Knowledge of Spanish takes on a special practical significance during a time when people of Hispanic descent are the U.S.'s largest minority group, and the number of native Spanish-speakers in the country continues to grow.

The curriculum encompasses introductory- through advanced-level language instruction, courses in the literature of Spain and Latin America, classes in Spanish Linguistics, insight into the history of Spanish-speaking people, and investigation of Spanish-speaking cultures today.

Spanish majors and others with a serious interest in the language deepen their understanding through one of the study abroad programs we offer in Argentina, Mexico, and Spain.

Study of Spanish prepares you for graduate school in Spanish and other fields. A background in Spanish paves the way to a range of career paths in the U.S. It is increasingly important in the business world and for many careers in education, government, social work, law, and other fields.

With a diversity of destinations, no wonder 50 percent of Gettysburg students study abroad during college - an extraordinary participation rate that reflects the school's belief in off-campus studies as an essential part of the degree, not an add-on.
