Gettysburg College speaker to examine environmental impact of war

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Author and activist Tom H. Hastings will examine the environmental costs of war in a talk titled "Ruling Ashes and Mud, or Living in Hope?" on Nov. 13 at Gettysburg College.

Hastings, coordinator of Peace and Nonviolence Studies at Portland State University (PSU) in Oregon, will speak at 7:30 p.m. in Mara Auditorium at Masters Hall near the campus fountain. The public is welcome at no charge.

Hastings, also a faculty member in PSU's conflict resolution graduate program, is the author of "Ecology of War and Peace: Counting Costs of Conflict."

Hastings' talk is part of the 20th annual Gettysburg College Area Studies Symposium. This year's theme is "Nature, War and Peace."

Gettysburg College is a highly selective four-year residential college of liberal arts and sciences. With approximately 2,500 students, it is located on a 200-acre campus adjacent to Gettysburg National Military Park. The college was founded in 1832.
