Meet the talented Class of 2018

Talented students from around the globe join Gettysburg College campus community
Welcome Class of 2018

Gettysburg College’s Class of 2018 includes 724 talented students hailing from 26 states and 15 countries. The class brings to campus a remarkable mix of academic and civic achievements, unique life experiences, and a drive to do great work.

While many students of the class held internships and participated in clubs, others jumpstarted their own companies and organizations, like Michael Farese ’18 of Sayville, N.Y., who cofounded Operation Sports Equipment (OSE) in 2007. OSE collects refurbished sports equipment and donates it to underprivileged communities and sports organizations. OSE earned the U.S. Congressional Award, the highest honor for youth that is legislated and presented by Congress.

Jamie Welch ’18 of Berlin, Md., a Presidential Volunteer Service Award winner, is the founding partner of Design Studio, LLC, as well as the founder of and sole program manager for Audiograted Radio Network, an internet radio station. Tianyi Yu ’18 of Beijing, China, meanwhile, is the founder of Robot Society and won a gold medal at the Asian Robotics Championship.

You may have also seen some of our newest Gettysburgians on television, including Nene Sy ’18 of New York, N.Y., who was selected by the Young Women’s Leadership Network to interview First Lady Michelle Obama for the Women in the World Summit this past spring. She was later interviewed by Barbara Walters and TODAY’s Lester Hold about the experience.

Yuki Sugiyama ’18 of Torrance, Calif., also shared the spotlight of the small screen when he acted in a commercial for the EA Sports game Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters.

Our first-years love to stay active too, like Aimee Bosman ’18 of Franschhoek, South Africa, who has swam the Midmar Mile—the world’s largest open-water swimming event—five times, and Sophie Sugar ’18 of Columbus, Ohio, who has hiked, climbed, and rafted in nearly 20 different national parks—from Maine to Florida and Hawaii to Montana.

Other fun Class of 2018 students:

  • Participated in mission trips to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, Malawi, Ecuador, and Solomon Islands

Walk or bike the battlefield. Find a place there to reflect. Spent time with new friends and allow new ideas to infuse your soul.

Appreciate the beauty and history of your surroundings. Make the friends that will last your lifetime. Take courses that interest you--not just the ones that will get you a job. Good luck!
