Student Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes for East Asian Studies Majors

Upon the completion of a major in East Asian Studies with China/Japan Track, students will:
1. achieve intermediate to advanced proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Chinese and/or Japanese, with the capacity to apply these skills in research and pursue career opportunities in government and corporate sectors.
2. demonstrate a deep understanding of the diverse histories, cultures, and perspectives within East Asia, while developing greater self-awareness of their intercultural competence and understand the value of diverse experiences.
3. gain in-depth, specialized knowledge that culminates in the completion of a capstone project.
4. conduct rigorous research using disciplinary methodology and sources in Chinese, Japanese, and/or English.
5. present their research and findings at a professional level, both orally and in writing.

Learning Outcomes for East Asian Studies Minors

Upon the completion of a minor in East Asian Studies with China/Japan Track, students will:
1. attain intermediate to advanced proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Chinese and/or Japanese.
2. demonstrate historical and cultural awareness of their chosen region and East Asia as a whole, while cultivating self-awareness of their intercultural competence and appreciating the value of diverse experiences.
3. acquire specialized knowledge within their chosen discipline.
4. develop and articulate oral and written arguments using appropriate disciplinary methodologies and sources.
