Barbara Schmitter Heisler

I am a political sociologist whose research has focused primarily on Europe and the United States, much of it on the topic of international migration. My research has been supported by several scholarships, including the Social Science Research Council and the German Marshall Fund of the United States. I was awarded a Berlin Prize by the American Academy in Berlin in 1999. My scholarly publications include numerous journal articles and book chapters on international migration, housing and the welfare state and three books: From German Prisoner of War to American Citizen: A Social History with 35 Interviews (McFarland Publishers, 2013), An Artist as Soldier: Seeking Refuge in Love and Art (Peter Lang, 2017) and co-authored with Lily M. Hoffman, Airbnb, STRs and the Future of Housing (Routledge, 2020).
