Sociology honors research offers Sociology majors the opportunity to conduct an independent research project on a topic of their choosing. In order to qualify for honors, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.3 (cumulative and major)* and must complete the honors project in their final year at the college. Interested students should contact a faculty member early in the semester before they wish to conduct their research. Note that final projects may take the form of a traditional research paper; website; or a rigorous public sociology project like a Substack/blog or series of podcasts.
The proposal will be 3-5 pages (not including the bibliography) and should include:
- A research question
- An indication of the project’s primary data source(s)
- The methodology to be used
- Proposed outcome (paper, website, Substack, podcasts, etc.)
- A detailed, week-by-week timeline for completion of the project
- An ASA-formatted bibliography of about 25 academic, peer-reviewed sources
See below for the timetables and deadlines for our spring and fall honors programs.
* Students without the requisite GPA are encouraged to petition the department for an exemption to the GPA requirement
