Phi Beta Kappa
Phi Beta Kappa, founded in 1776, is the oldest Greek-letter society in America and exists to celebrate excellence in the liberal arts and sciences, champion freedom of thought, and to advocate for the value and benefits of liberal arts and sciences education.
The Gettysburg College chapter, Iota of Pennsylvania, was chartered in 1923 and is today one of more than 290 Phi Beta Kappa chapters in American colleges and universities.
The Iota of Pennsylvania chapter holds two induction ceremonies per year in October and April. The chapter elects to membership students from the top 10% of the graduating class who have distinguished academic achievement in the liberal arts and sciences and exhibit high moral character and intellectual curiosity.
Election to Phi Beta Kappa is perhaps the most widely recognized academic distinction in American higher education.
