Engagement beyond the classroom

Message sent April 9, 2020

Message sent to students and parents on behalf of Julie Ramsey and Chris Zappe to introduce opportunities for engagement beyond the classroom and to provide links to students if they have questions or concerns.

Dear Students,

We wanted to reach out to you in these challenging times to offer our support and to highlight some additional resources for you to stay connected to the College. Most importantly, we hope you–and those you care about–are safe and healthy. The next few weeks are predicted to be quite difficult as the pandemic peaks in many areas. We know that these are unprecedented times and the uncertainty of it all can be troubling, especially when you are missing contact with those closest to you.

With that in mind, while we are eager for all of our students and faculty to return to campus, we’d like to call your attention to a few opportunities that will allow you to engage with your friends and different organizations and resources on campus.

College Life has created organized opportunities under three themes as ways to engage beyond the classroom:

  • Virtual offerings focused on your well-being,
  • Ongoing opportunities to engage with key programs on campus,
  • Fun opportunities to unplug and connect with others.

Please see a sample of our offerings at the end of my email and please regularly check our Virtual Co-curricular Programs and Events page.

Our hope is that you are beginning to adapt to classes being offered remotely. Adjusting to a new way of completing your courses and interacting with faculty and classmates is likely a new experience for most of you.

The most important thing for you to remember is that if you need help, please reach out to us.

  • If you continue to encounter challenges with technology and internet access, please contact GTech at (717) 337-6935.
  • For academic related issues, please contact your faculty members and your academic advisor.
  • If you are experiencing difficulties regarding academic-related issues and your academic advisor is not able to assist you, please contact the Office of Academic Advising and Student Support Services immediately at (717) 337-6579 or request an appointment.
  • If you have a question or concern and would like someone at the College to reach out to you, please complete this brief Google Form and we will follow up with you as soon as possible and within 48 hours.

If you have any questions or if there is assistance or support we might offer, please contact us directly at ramsey@gettysburg.edu or czappe@gettysburg.edu

These trying times have presented challenges few of us anticipated but we stand prepared to support you.

Warm regards,

Dean Julie Ramsey

Provost Chis Zappe

Your well-being

Members of the College’s Counseling, Health, Campus Recreation, Multicultural Education, and Religious and Spiritual Life are here as a resource for you as you work to adjust to the many changes and challenges that COVID-19 and our shift to remove learning has created.

Counseling Services remains available to assist students as needed. Information is available on their website about taking care of yourself during Covid-19. Currently, Counseling can provide teletherapy services for students within PA, pending agreement between student and provider about the appropriateness for a given student of engaging in remote services. Notably, however, Counseling will readily work with ANY student to assist with finding resources near them, provide consultation, or connect students with campus resources. Students can reach out to Counseling Services via the office phone (717) 337-6960, email to their prior counselor, or email to Dr. Bradley, Director of Counseling Services kbradley@gettysburg.edu. Counseling is also working with colleagues across campus to notify students of online opportunities to focus on their mental health; more on this will be forthcoming. Finally, Counseling Services is launching GettysburgGood on Instagram, to stay in touch with students and provide ongoing useful information. Be assured Counseling’s dog Zach will have an online presence!
